EA Slams PS3 Development Tools

I thought it was interesting that EA Tiburon, the section behind the recent NASCAR release (of all games), would call out Sony for poor tools this late in the game--almost a year after the PS3's release. Still, the quote, ripped from "PSX Extreme," shows that some developers are still quite unhappy with the state of development.

The truth is the PS3’s tools and the way it works just sucks. The truth is they are both virtually the same in terms of hardware when it comes to how powerful they are, maybe the PS3 has a few different things that makes it a bit more advance, and Sony has this idea that it is designed for optimal development but that’s a load of crap. In the last generation we would make the game for PS2 and then port it over to Xbox, but because Xbox was easier to develop for, we could actually enhance the title a little if we wanted to. The case with this generation is different, now we make the game for 360 first and then port it over to PS3, but we really don’t have the time to mess with how the PS3 works to really add to much more. It will change in the future, but for now it sucks.

The site I took the website goes on the call this whining because of a few other games (namely, an unnamed Crytek game [with no real development experience], Epic's UT 3, and Killzone 2). Currently, all three of those titles are single platform, even though UT 3 is a timed exclusive, which would make complaining about the system rather stupid because you would be stuck biting the hand that feeds you, especially prior to release.

The guys at EA never seem to think before they speak.  Not too long ago I recall seeing one VP at EA critizing the gaming industry in general for not being innovative enough and just making sequels and games off of existing licenses.

And not surprising to hear about PS3 difficulties.  It seems like Sony  didn't even want to try to do any work with their console (to make it better/easier), and figured the Playstation brand and some big name exclusives (maybe no more) are all that would be needed to reclaim number 1.

This might be a case of EA hoping to make enough noise that Sony will do something about it.

Madden, NCAA and Nascar are better on 360 than PS3.  The PS3 is not some super powerful console that Sony made it out to be.  It was not delayed due to hardware being too advanced, it was delayed because of Blu-Ray.  It should have been out 6 months after the 360, not 1 year.

Microsoft has clearly done a better job creating developer tools -- they even have easy to use hobbiest coding platforms now (XNA -- Picky I am a little surprised you haven't made a game for the PC yet).  The E3 prior to the 360's launch had many games running on Macs -- they were up and running in time for launch. Microsoft's hardware is excellent for gaming and their software kits are excellent for development.  Their hardware does suck for working though...

I agree with Dozens -- Sony thought "PLAYSTATION" was enough to win.  The PS3 is really going to be in trouble this fall as their AAA titles keep scoring getting poor reviews -- Lair and Heavenly Sword.  That leaves Ratchet and Clank and Uncharted.  Those two will probably be quality games, but I highly doubt they are system sellers.  Then of course they have Half Life Orange Box and a few other multiplatform titles that for the most part are running behind 360 by a week or more or just are better on 360 due to performance or Live!

Even the Wii has more appealing games to me if I was going to buy a second console.

Sony, and Microsoft for that matter, was depending on GTA 4 to really carry them too. Unfortunately for both, Rockstar delayed it to Summer 08.

As for XNA, I haven't thought of any games worth attempting to do except maybe a Halo inspired Worms, but that would be stomped out by MS legal pretty quickly.
